Nikiwe Bikitsha  
 

Nikiwe began her radio journalism life in Cape Town in 1997, as news reporter for 567 Cape Talk. She covered many of the province’s major stories, being at many of the scenes of the bombings, which wreaked havoc in Cape Town in the late 90's. She was one of the first journalists on the scene at the Planet Hollywood bombing in 1998. In 2000, she decided to move to Johannesburg to improve her opportunities and since then has worked her way up in the industry.

At Talk Radio 702, Nikiwe was senior reporter, desk news editor, afternoon news reader and occasional talk show host. She was also involved in covering the Zimbabwe elections in 2001. In addition, she reported extensively on the 2004 South African elections. In 2005, Nikiwe joined John Perlman on the SABC's early morning news show, ‘AMLive’. On the TV front, she anchored “Interface”, a current affairs show on SABC 3.

 

Some of Nikiwe’s TV career highlights have included coverage of the Schabir Shaik trial and being the first broadcaster to interview the country's deputy president Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka.

 

In early 2007, Nikiwe moved across to global TV Network, CNBC and she is now developing a new weekly Business Programme for SABC and write a weekly column for the Mail & Guardian.

 

Nikiwe received the ‘Rising Star’ accolade at the “MTN Women in the Media” awards for 2006.

 
Dr. XP  Guma 

Dr X.P. Guma originates from the Eastern Cape and obtained his MA (Economics) degree from the University of Toronto (Canada);  and his PhD (Economics) degree from the Victoria University of Manchester (England). 

Dr Guma served in the Economics Department of the University of Swaziland, in various capacities, during the period 1978S1990;  and was the Director of the Social Science Research Unit of the said University from 1990 until 1994 when he returned to South Africa.

He has served on various academic boards, including that of the Economic Research Unit of the University of Natal;  has served as external examiner, and has had extensive experience as an economic consultant to bodies such as the United Nations Development Programme (Swaziland), the African Development Bank, government departments and private sector organisations.  He joined the South African Reserve Bank in 1995 and currently serves as Deputy Governor.

 
Governor T.T. Mboweni  
 

The youngest of three children, Tito Mboweni was born on 16 March 1959. He grew up in Tzaneen in the Northern Province.

He attended the University of the North between 1979 and 1980, where he registered for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He did not complete his studies there and left South Africa to go into exile in 1980.

While in exile in Lesotho, he joined the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s governing party, and was an activist for the party in many capacities.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (honours equivalent) degree in economics and political science from the National University of Lesotho in 1985. In 1987 he obtained a Master of Arts degree in development economics from the University of East Anglia in England.

Mr. Mboweni was Minister of Labour from May 1994 to July 1998 in President Nelson Mandela’s cabinet. Prior to his appointment as Minister of Labour, Mr. Mboweni was Deputy Head of the Department of Economic Policy in the ANC. Within this department, he was also specifically responsible for coordinating Trade and Industrial Policy. He also represented the ANC on several domestic and international platforms.

Mr Mboweni was a member of the ANC’s National Executive and National Working Committees and was also Chairperson of the National Executive Committee’s Economic Transformation Committee, which developed and coordinated ANC economic policies.

Mr Mboweni became one of the World Economic Forum’s Global Leaders of Tomorrow in 1995.

In 1997 Mr Mboweni was appointed head of the ANC’s Policy Department which was responsible for managing ANC processes. Upon joining the SA Reserve Bank, he resigned all of his elected and appointed positions in the ANC.

He joined the SA Reserve Bank in July 1998 as Advisor to the Governor. In August 1999 he was appointed Governor of the SA Reserve Bank. During his tenure, he was appointed honourary Professor of Economics at the University of South Africa for 2000 to present.

Mr Mboweni is a keen fly fisherman and lists soccer among his interests.

David Clark 
 

After graduating in Economics and Politics from London University in 1969, David Clark has spent his career working in currency and capital markets for Bankers Trust, Commerzbank, HSBC and Bankgesellschaft before moving into non-executive director and advisory positions.

He is Chairman of Charity Bank, a non-executive director of CafBank (both attached to the Charities Aid Foundation), is Senior Independent (SID) non-executive director of Tullett Prebon, and a non-executive director of Westpac Europe Limited. He was a senior advisor to the UK’s Financial Services Authority and has sat on a number of Basel II working groups.

He was President of ACI, The Financial Markets Association from 1992-95 and is an Honorary President of both ACI and ACI UK, and in March 2006 was appointed as Chairman of the Wholesale Markets Brokers Association and the London Energy Brokers Association. He is also a Senior Advisor to gfta, an FX overlay fund manager, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Operational Risk.

 
Goolam Ballim 

Goolam Ballim is Group Economist at Standard Bank. After joining the bank's Economics Division in 1999, he soon headed the financial markets desk and later relocated to the Corporate and Investment Banking Division of the group, where he served as Senior Treasury Economist. Goolam was appointed Group Economist in May 2004, and heads a research team whose  particular strength is its analysis of macroeconomic and political economy subjects in South Africa and other African countries.

Rudolf Gouws 

Rudolf Gouws obtained a masters degree in Economics from the University of Stellenbosch in 1971. He became Chief Economist of the Nedbank Group in 1979, and since 1986 he has been Chief Economist of Rand Merchant Bank and a member of its board.

He chaired the Economic Policy Committee of BSA (Business South Africa) from 1996 to 2003, and served in Nedlac. He is an honorary professor of Economics at the University of Stellenbosch.

Jeff Gable   - Challenging Times

Jeff Gable was appointed Head of Research of Absa Capital in January 2007.

He is responsible for all South African and Sub-Saharan Africa research for Absa Capital, Absa Group, Barclays Capital and Barclays Group.

His researchers publish fundamental research and analyses on economics, politics and Fixed Income, Rand and Credit markets. His fulfils a spokesperson role in terms of the media, clients and business leadership structures.

Jeff joined Absa Capital from Barclays Capital in London, where he was the Chief Economist for Central Europe and South Africa in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) team. He held this office from June 2004.

Previously he was Deutsche Bank’s Senior Economist for Eastern Europe,  Middle East and Africa (EEMEA) based in London. He performed this role from 1998 to 2004.

Before that he was a Senior Research Officer at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC from 1995 to 1998.

He was a Research Assistant at the Central Bank of Canada in 1993 and 1994.

Dennis Dykes - Correction, recession, depression?

Dennis is the Nedbank Group's Chief Economist.  He joined the Group in December 1983, spending the first five years with the Nedbank Group Economic Unit.  In January 1989 he was transferred to UAL Merchant Bank as its economist where he remained until his appointment as Group Chief Economist in May 1994.  He is a director of SACCI (the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, formerly SACOB), a former Chairman of Business Unity South Africa’s Standing Committee on Economic Policy and is a business representative on the Nedlac Public Finance and Monetary Policy Chamber.  He is the author of many articles for in-house and external publications.  In 2004 he contributed a chapter on inflation targeting for the book ‘Manuel, Markets and Money’.  In September 2003 Dennis won the Reuters Economist of the Year award.

His qualifications include an honours degree from Bath University and a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics.  Dennis gives economic advice to all areas of the group and its clients.  Given the nature of the group's activities, he tends to focus on the interaction between the real economy and the financial markets.

Clem Sunter

Clem Sunter was born in Suffolk, England on 8 August 1944 and was educated at Winchester College. Clem Sunter went to Oxford where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics before joining Charter Consolidated as a management trainee in 1966. 

In 1971, Clem Sunter moved to Lusaka in Zambia to work for Anglo American Corporation Central Africa.  Clem Sunter was transferred in 1973 to the Head Office of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa in Johannesburg.  Clem was Chairman of the Gold and Uranium Division from 1990 to 1996. Clem Sunter is probably best known for his "High Road/Low Road" scenarios from South Africa in the Mid 1980's. Clem Sunter is now Chairman of Corporate Affairs and Chairman of the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund.

In early 2001 "The Mind of a Fox" co-authored with Chantel Ilbury, was released. The book anticipated a major terrorist attack on a western city before the September 11th tragedy in New York. The book has sold over 40000 copies.

In 2007, Clem Sunter’s new book, “Socrates and the Fox: A strategic dialogue”, co-authored with Chantel Ilbury, was released. By its very nature Socratic dialogue transforms the strategic conversation from the normal, dreary type of superficial analysis that companies go through nowadays to a full-blooded, back-to-basics debate. Clem and Chantell have developed a unique and independently crafted methodology which integrates scenario planning into the mainstream process of strategic planning and decision-making. Their version of the Socratic method has come about through rigorous application, re-evaluation and fine-tuning in the course of facilitating countless sessions with a diverse portfolio of companies throughout the world – from giant multinationals to family-run businesses.
Mr D. Mminele

Mr Daniel Mminele was appointed Executive General Manager: Markets on 01 August 2005.  In this role he is responsible for the management, supervision and control of the Financial Markets Department, the National Payments System Department, the Exchange Control Department and the Financial Services Department of the SARB. Prior to this he was head of the Financial Markets Department (April 2003 to July 2005), General Manager of the International Banking Department (April 2001 to August 2003) and Executive Assistant to the Senior Deputy Governor (September 1999 to March 2001).

Mr Mminele is a member of the Governor’s Executive Committee and has been a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the SARB since August 2004.

Mr Mminele’s experience in South Africa prior to joining the SARB includes that of Deputy Divisional Head of Special Projects at African Merchant Bank Ltd and Customer Relations Manager (Corporate Banking) of Commerzbank AG, Johannesburg.

Between 1987 and 1995 he held various positions at Westdeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale (WestLB) in D�sseldorf (Germany) and London.

Cigdem Kose - Central Bank of Turkey

Born in İzmir in 1964, Ciğdem Kose graduated from the Middle East Technical University in 1986.

Ciğdem Kose began her career as an officer at the Markets Department of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey in 1987. She left the Bank in 1989 and worked as Specialist under the Deputy Executive Director charged for Treasury and Finance at Turk Eximbank. She became Director of Treasury In 1994 and worked as Head of Treasury and Finance Department between 1996 and 2001. Ciğdem Kose re-joined the Central Bank in April 2001 and was appointed Deputy Executive Director of Markets Department. Mrs. Kose has been serving as Executive Director of Markets Department since 2004.

Mr Louis de Montpellier - Few observations on Central Banks and the Financial Crisis 

Louis de Montpellier, a Belgian citizen, has been Deputy Head of the Banking Department since June 2005. In his current role, Mr de Montpellier co‑manages all the banking services provided to some 150 central banks and international institutions which are clients of the BIS. This includes the management of the BIS’s USD eq 350 billion plus balance sheet and responsibility for a 100-strong team covering all the front-, middle- and back-office functions. He is one of the 10 members of the BIS Senior Management team.

From 2000 to 2005, he was with Morgan Stanley in London, where he was responsible for the origination of the funding, risk management, asset management and securitisation business with sovereign and other public sector clients in Europe. From 1995 to 2000 he was Executive Director of the Belgian Public Debt Agency. From 1987 to 1995, Louis held various positions in the international financial markets, including with the BIS in Basel as an institutional portfolio manager, CSFB in London as capital market coverage officer and the EBRD in London as Director of Funding.  Louis holds a Master in Law and a Master of Arts in Economics from the Catholic Universities of Leuven/Louvain (Belgium) and a Master in Business Administration from the Johnson School of Management, Cornell University, (New York, USA).

Mr Lazarous Kamanga - Central Bank Panel Discussion

Mr. Lazarus Brighton Kamanga is the Acting Director of the Financial Markets Department at the Bank of Zambia.  Prior to taking up this position in December 2008, he was Assistant Director Market Operations. During his term in Financial Markets Department, Mr. Kamanga has held several positions that include Assistant Manager Market studies, Manager Liquidity Forecasting and Manager Government securities. 

 Mr. Kamanga joined the Bank of Zambia in 1995 as an economist in the Financial Markets Department.  This was after he had worked for Stanbic Bank Zambia limited for three years.  He holds a Masters Degree in Financial Economics from the University of London (SOAS), Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics University of Zambia. He is a graduate Fellow of the Macro Economic and Financial Management Institute, Harare (MEFMI) specializing in Financial Markets Development.

Mr Paul Mercier European Central Bank

Paul Mercier is currently Deputy Director General of Market Operations at the European Central Bank. Previous assignements:  European Monetary Institute, National Bank of Belgium and  Office of Commissioner Mr. Willy De Clercq at the European Commission. Former Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Law of the University Saint Louis in Brussels.

Alexandre Gautier  - Reserve Management during the Financial Crises

Alexandre Gautier is deputy head of Market Operations Department at Banque de France what covers market monitoring, assets mangement, monetary policy implementation and other market activties. He joined the French banking supervision authority in 1996 as specialist in market operations activities after two years at the Paris Stock Exchange.  In 2001, he joined Banque de France as FX reserves portfolio manager and became head of Risk Management in 2003. He has been in its current position since 2006. Alexandre Gautier is Post Graduated in “Law and Management of International Business” (ESCP business school, Paris) and Graduated in “Banking, Finance and Insurance” (Dauphine University Paris). He is borned in 1968 and is French and US national.

Iraj Abedian - Market Protection: The Impact of Protectionism on Global Trade

Dr Iraj Abedian, an economist by training, has extensive business and research experience in South Africa.  Since 1994 he has been involved in macroeconomic policy making and is a respected adviser to a number of public and private sector organisations.  Dr Abedian served as the chief economist and EXCO member of Standard Bank Group of SA over 2000 to 2004 (may) before co-founding Pan-African Capital Holdings in 2005.  Currently, he is also a member of President Thabo Mbeki’s Panel of Economic Advisers; and is an honorary professor of economics at University of Pretoria.

Quinton Coetzee

Quinton Coetzee was born in the Namib Desert and having spent most of his young life in the bush, he began his working career near there as a hunter.  Quinton Coetzee later attained a university degree in the natural sciences after which he specialised in bush survival.  Today Quinton Coetzee is considered one of the leading bushcraft specialists in southern Africa.

Quinton Coetzee has always had a passion for expeditions.  Quinton Coetzee has explored remote areas from the icy sub-Antarctic to the sweltering deserts of the Middle East and has spent time with “vanishing tribes” in Africa and the Amazon jungles.

As a conservationist, Quinton Coetzee has managed the animal collection for one of the largest zoological Gardens in Africa, where he was committed to the breeding of many endangered species worldwide.  In this regard Quinton Coetzee is well known for his commentary in print, on air and on television as a presenter of the popular wildlife programme “Veldfocus” on 50/50.  Quinton Coetzee is also trained as a classical pianist.

Quinton Coetzee’s message has universal appeal and he has addressed audiences worldwide.  Quinton Coetzee’s talk assists people to tap into their natural potential to improve their business skills and performance and to gain a better understanding of themselves and others.
Colin Lambert

Colin Lambert is Editor of Profit & Loss magazine, a monthly publication that studies the impact of new trends and practices on the FX and OTC derivative markets – with a particular emphasis on e-FX. Formed in 1999, P&L has led the debate over the impact of the electronic channel on trading activities at banks, corporations and money managers.

Colin joined P&L in August 2001 as Deputy Editor, after a 21 year trading career in the foreign exchange industry. During this time he spent the majority of time trading spot FX before he moved into a proprietary trading role. He finished his dealing career at British Petroleum. During his trading years, he spent time working in London, New York, Singapore, Tokyo and Toronto and held several senior posts including that of Chief Dealer, FX and Deputy Treasurer.

Colin is an honorary member of ACI Australia and ACI UK – both affiliated to ACI – The Financial Markets Association, and is the author of “Once A Dealer – 50 years of ACI”, a history of the Association.
Rob Close
 

Rob Close was appointed Chief Executive Officer of CLS Group Holdings and President and CEO of CLS Bank International in January 2006. Previously he held the positions of Deputy CEO of CLS Group Holdings and CEO of CLS Services Ltd. He joined CLS in November 2000 as Chief Operating Officer. Previously, Rob had been, until mid 1997, part-time Programme Director for the ‘G20’ and responsible for establishing the Business Requirements Specification for the CLSBank service.

Previous to joining CLS, Rob was Group Payments Strategy Director at Barclays Bank,responsible for such activities as the Group Euro Programme, Electronic Trust infrastructure,Securities Settlement and Payments Industry Management. The latter involved directorships with SWIFT SC (Brussels), Identrus (New York), BACS (as Deputy Chairman) and CHAPS (as Deputy Chairman).

Rob’s 29 years with Barclays included senior roles as Managing Director of Barclays Global Payments, Head of Money Transmission, Deputy Head of Electronic Banking, Deputy Head of Personal Sector Marketing and Assistant Treasurer.

Rob joined the Bank of England’s Foreign Exchange Joint Standing Committee in September, 2008. He has a BA and MSc in Economics and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. Rob was awarded the OBE for services relating to the Euro.

Nick Dyne
                                    

Nick Dyne, Founder and Head, Business Development, Logicscope Limited

Nick has been designing innovative software solutions for financial institutions for over 15 years.

Johann Bence

Johann has been in the employ of the SA Reserve Bank for 27 years.  He joined the SA Reserve Bank in 1982 and worked in the Economics/Research Department where he held various positions.  In 1995 he joined the then National Payment System Division in the Information Technology Department as a payment system specialist, and is currently the Head: Oversight: National Payment System Department: SA Reserve Bank.  He holds BComm, BComm (Hons) and MComm (Economics) degrees, and has done an Executive Development Programme (EDP) at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).

Arthur Cousins

Joined The Standard Bank In December 1969.  First worked in the bank branch network.  Transferred to Head Office In 1971 and held various positions In Treasury, International Banking and Custody.  Previous position was Director responsible for Treasury Back Office, Trade Finance and Custody Operations.  Current position entails involvement in a number of domestic payments and securities initiatives as well as international initiatives and organisations including CLS,  Global Payments Forum, Identrus, ISO and S.W.I.F.T.

Board Member of  S.W.I.F.T. and CLS, member of the Global Payments Forum Steering committee, recent Chairman of The South African Banks Treasury Operations Forum and member of The Money Market Forum.  Chairman of the Financial Industry Standards Association of South Africa well as being a member of The JSE Securities Exchange Advisory Committee for Clearing and Settlement.  Represent South Africa on the ISO 20022 Registration Management Group
